Billie Holiday is best known for her career as a singer. Few were aware that Holiday was somewhat of an activist in the war on drugs. She used marijuana and discussed it openly. For her outspoken views on the persecution of black people and the need for change she was targeted. From the high point of her career until the day she left this earth she was harassed by the government and repeatedly set up. She died handcuffed to a hospital bed. Denied proper healthcare and basic civil rights. Billie was definitely a woman who didn’t back down so it’s only right we celebrate her this month and every month thereafter.
